Taxpayers in Kalamazoo should not be compelled to subsidize homosexual relationships as if they are equal or similar to marriage.’” (more) March 16, 2005 “Gary Glenn, president of the Midland-based American Family Association of Michigan, welcomed the attorney general’s opinion. ‘This validates what we were saying before and after the election,’ Glenn said. ‘I don’t think there’s any question the majority of Michigan taxpayers will be strongly supportive of the attorney general’s opinion.’” (more…) March 16, 2005 AG Opinion: public employers cannot offer benefits based on homosexual relationships YPSILANTI, Mi. — Michigan’s constitution “prohibits state and local governmental entities from conferring benefits on their employees on the basis of a ‘domestic partner’ agreement,” Attorney General Mike Cox wrote Wednesday in an official legal opinion. A statewide family values group Wednesday said Eastern Michigan University should immediately comply with the opinion by ending its half-off tuition policy for students involved in such homosexual “partnerships” with university employees, as well as other spousal-type benefits provided on the basis of such relationships. “EMU administrators are not above the law, and evidence continues to mount that their half-off tuition policy clearly violates our state constitution as amended by the people of Michigan,” Gary Glenn, president of the American Family Association of Michigan said. “In light of the attorney general’s official legal opinion, EMU officials should immediately stop violating our state constitution and stop forcing Michigan taxpayers to subsidize and financially reward homosexual behavior.” (more…) March 14, 2005 Justice Roy Moore’s Ten Commandments monument on tour in Michigan this week! Dear AFA-Michigan supporter, You may recall that former Alabama Supreme Court Chief Justice Roy Moore — the “Ten Commandments judge” — placed a 5,000-pound display of the Ten Commandments in the lobby of the state Supreme Court and refused to remove it. Because of his insistence that Alabama had a constitutional duty to acknowledge God, he was removed from office by an appointed panel of judges despite having been elected by over 60 percent of the people of Alabama. Several Fridays ago, Gov. Jennifer Granholm said on Lansing TV that she would support displaying the Ten Commandments in our state Capitol rotunda. (She flip-flopped on the issue within 48 hours and said she opposes the display.) http://www.freep.com/news/statewire/sw111714_20050214.htm Nonetheless, the very next day, on Saturday morning, AFA-Michigan contacted the veterans group that has taken Judge Moore’s Ten Commandments monument on tour throughout the country this past year and asked them to add Michigan to their tour schedule. Rep. Jack Hoogendyk, R-Kalamazoo, a strong and trustworthy voice in the Legislature for traditional family values, also contacted the tour group and is sponsoring the monument’s visit to Michigan this week. (See tour schedule below) Please show your support for America’s right to acknowledge God and the foundational role the values of the Ten Commandments of God have played in our nation’s history and heritage. The monument will be on display at the following locations: (more…) March 13, 2005 Thank Michigan Association of School Boards for resisting homosexual agenda in our public schools! Dear AFA-Michigan supporter, In Sunday’s Oakland Press, a spokesman for the Michigan Association of School Boards agreed with AFA-Michigan that public schools should not adopt policies that single out students involved in homosexual behavior for special “protected class” status. (See full article below) Such “gay rights” policies inevitably end up being used by schools to promote, legitimize, and normalize homosexual behavior, despite the severe medical and spiritual consequences to young people. One thing’s for sure. The Michigan Association of Schools Boards will come under intense attack this week for daring oppose homosexual activists’ plans to use our public schools to indoctrinate students. Homosexual activists and their media and school board allies will demand that MASB retract and apologize for its statements, change its position, and perhaps even fire the staff member who was interviewed. Please contact MASB today and thank them for advising school boards not to adopt special “sexual orientation” policies in our public schools. Thank them for protecting the best interests of all children. Urge them not to back down under politically correct pressure from homosexual activists and their allies: Mr. Justin King, Executive Director Michigan Association of School Boards E-mail: jking@masb.org Phone: 517-327-5900 Fax: 517-327-0775 Mailing address: 1001 Centennial Way, Suite 400 Lansing, Michigan 48917 If you can, please also contact your local school board members and urge them not to adopt special “sexual orientation” policies in your children’s or grandchildren’s schools. Thanks as always for your support! Respectfully, Gary Gary Glenn, President AFA-Michigan March 13, 2005 Gary Glenn, president of the American Family Association (of Michigan), objects to (public school harassment) policies that include the term ’sexual orientation’ rather than those that simply ban any and all forms of harassment. ‘One (policy) suggests you are interested in protecting kids, and the other suggests you are interested in promoting a particular social agenda,’ he said. Glenn said references to sexual orientation…are being used to present ‘a glowingly positive portrayal of homosexuality.’ Religious freedom advocates believe students who are taught at home and at church that homosexual behavior is sinful, abnormal and harmful shouldn’t be forced (at school) to hear messages that directly contradict constitutionally protected religious views. …’I do believe that school districts have taken the biased position of indoctrinating students that it’s OK to be gay,’ he said. Glenn later cited a number of studies by respected educational institutions that indicate that, in addition to elevated instances of mental illness and substance abuse, members of the gay community experience higher rates of sexually transmitted diseases, domestic abuse and shortened life spans. ‘Our first and foremost priority is to make sure that students are aware of these consequences if they choose to act on (homosexual) tendencies,” he said.” March 11, 2005 by Angela E. Lackey, Midland Daily News An article on witchcraft by a Central Middle School student has a local group concerned. “Most people believe witches don’t exist, and I am here to prove them wrong,” wrote the eighth-grader, adding that her aunt is a Wiccan witch. The short article was printed in the winter issue of the Cavalier Chronicle. “We think it’s inappropriate for a middle school student newspaper to encourage 11-year-olds to experiment with witchcraft,” said Gary Glenn of the Midland-based American Family Association of Michigan. The student wrote she has “decided to experiment with this religion and see if this is the way for me.” She said other students also would like some of the things Wiccans do, including having weekly meetings to gossip and talk about the Wiccan way and casting spells and making potions. Glenn said the AFA has several concerns with the article besides the promotion of witchcraft. He said there is a “potential legal liability” if students think the school is sanctioning witchcraft. The group also is concerned about recent events in Muskegon and Ohio. In Muskegon, a teacher has been accused of marrying a student in a Wiccan ceremony. Glenn said he talked with Principal Paula Geller and asked if Christian, Jewish and Muslim students would be allowed to promote their faiths. “We feel that we’ve handled it appropriately,” Geller told the Daily News. She would not say what action was taken. Glenn said he would like the school’s newspaper to print an apology and a retraction, making it clear the school does not promote witchcraft. (more) March 8, 2005 Family group warns Midland officials: school newspaper’s promotion of witchcraft may expose children to harm MIDLAND, Mich. — A statewide family values group Tuesday praised Midland Central Middle School Principal Paula Geller for pledging to ensure that the middle school’s student newspaper will not publish articles in the future encouraging its 11- to 13-year old readers to consider experimenting with witchcraft. Gary Glenn, Midland, president of the American Family Association of Michigan, contacted school officials in response to the Winter 2005 issue of the middle school’s Cavalier Chronicle, which included an article entitled “Good Witch or Bad Witch?” in which an 8th grade member of the student newspaper staff wrote that “most people believe that witches don’t exist, and I am here to prove them wrong.” “My family is a normal family, except that my aunt is a Wiccan witch,” the Central Middle School 8th grader wrote. “…I have decided to experiment with this religion and see if this is the way for me. I also think that some of the kids in school would like some of the things that Wiccans do, like: We gather in meetings every week and talk, gossip, and learn about the Wiccan way. We cast spells and potions. …So, if you are interested, you can look up some books…and learn all you want about Wiccans.” (more…) March 8, 2005 “’We don’t have any doubt that Eastern’s intent is to treat homosexual domestic partnerships as being equal or similar to marriage and is thus a violation of the state constitution,’ said Gary Glenn, president of AFA-Michigan. …Glenn also said the American Family Association is opposed to EMU’s policy because it forces taxpayers to subsidize tuition for an employee’s domestic partner and because it promotes an unhealthy lifestyle. ‘Men age 20 who engage in homosexual or bisexual behavior will live eight to 20 years less than the general population,’ Glenn said. ‘So, if we truly care about the health and lives of Michigan college students, we certainly wouldn’t be rewarding homosexuals with free tuition and thus encouraging self-destructive behavior.’â€? Jennifer) Granholm to build a (Ten Commandments) statue, said he hopes the court allows the displays. ‘There is nothing in the Constitution that prohibits such displays,’ Glenn said. ‘The people of Michigan and all Americans have the right to acknowledge the religious heritage of our people in our public buildings.’” (more) |
