Dear AFA-Michigan supporter,
As we prepare once again to respond to requests from local citizens to help them defend their community from homosexual activists’ political agenda – see news article below — we deeply appreciate any financial support you can offer.
Under pressure from the Triangle Foundation, the Dearborn City Council last week voted unanimously — including state Republican Party co-chair Margy Van Houten — in favor of enacting a new ordinance that creates special “protected class” status based on so-called “sexual orientation” and “gender identity.”
The “gender identity” language in particular is so radical in its effects that even openly homosexual Congressman Barney Frank, D-Mass., refused to include it in his federal “gay rights” legislation.

Grover Norquist betrays conservatives
Speaks at Log Cabin Republican fundraiser
Grover Norquist, president of Americans for Tax Reform, is under fire for speaking at a Log Cabin Republican fundraiser in Texas. The Dallas event, the largest fundraising event of the year for the homosexual Republican group, was raising funds in part to fight Proposition 2; the proposed Texas amendment that would define marriage as between one man and one woman. Bob Knight, Director of CWA’s Culture & Family Institute, says this is not the first time high-profile conservative leaders have turned on the social conservatives of their own party. Republican Party co-chair voted FOR radical “gay rights” ordinance
Margie Van Houten, state co-chair of the Michigan Republican Party and a member of the Dearborn Heights City Council, last week joined the rest of the council in unanimously voting to approve the first “gay rights” ordinance adopted anywhere in Michigan in over four years.
The radical “sexual orientation” and “gender identity” language included in the ordinance is found in only two other cities in the state — Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti — establishing special protected class status on the basis of not only homosexual behavior, but cross-dressing.
Van Houten initially expressed opposition to this language, but when it was added over her objections, she “caved” — as reported in the commentary below by homosexual activist Sean Kosofsky –and voted for the ordinance anyway.
Thankfully, it is not too late to stop this radical ordinance. As in other cities, citizens of Dearborn Heights can launch a petition drive to force a public ballot vote on the issue before it becomes law. However, the signature requirement is high, and the time limit for gathering them is very short. It’ll be tough to do without
Please join AFA-Michigan in expressing your disappointment with Margie Van Houten’s vote in support of this “gay rights” ordinance, and urge her — if she’s serious about opposing its radical “sexual orientation” and “gender identity” language — to do everything in her power not to let it take effect without a vote of the people.

“Gary Glenn, president of the American Family Association of Michigan, was not impressed with (Grover Norquist’s) explanation. ‘Log Cabin’s accounting shell game will not cover up Grover’s act of utter betrayal of the Reagan coalition of social and fiscal conservatives,’ Glenn told Cybercast News Service. …Glenn was also critical of Norquist’s efforts to ‘raise money for an organization (Log Cabin Republicans) actively campaigning against the Texas marriage amendment, whose national affiliate last year spent $1 million in TV ads blasting President Bush for his support of a federal marriage amendment.”

When Howell High School’s homosexual student club hung the official “gay pride” flag in the school’s main stairwell to protest voter approval of the Marriage Protection Amendment, Howell school board members ignored parents’ protests and officially approved the display, even holding a flag dedication ceremony.
The same school board arrogantly refuses to allow displays of the national motto of the United States: “In God We Trust.”

“Sam Belanger, youth pastor of Howell Assembly of God Church…wants his name removed from the resolution because of the continuing controversy of the rainbow flag hung in the school by the Diversity Club and approved by district administration. …Opponents to the public display of the flag have stated it represents gay pride and promotes homosexuality in the school. …What he said he originally saw as a ’statement of good faith toward honoring diversity’ has become a ‘full-blown approval of the homosexual lifestyle,’ which stood in opposition of his personal beliefs.”

Howell school board again rejects LOVE’s requests
by Stephenie Koehn, News Staff Reporter
It appears that a local group calling itself the Livingston Organization for Values in Education is unwilling to accept “no” for an answer to its offer to provide copies of the motto “In God We Trust” to be hung in Howell Public Schools classrooms.
Although representatives of LOVE have been told on several occasions that the district’s Board of Education is not interested in its offer and also that it has no intention of ordering the high school Diversity Club to remove a rainbow-colored flag to which they object, LOVE members continue to argue the subject with school officials.

Another Republican who voted for special rights based on homosexual behavior was Rep. Thaddeus McCotter…
“The House version of the bill (HR 3132) includes a controversial amendment, drafted by Rep. John Conyers of Michigan, which adds violence motivated by sexual orientation, gender or disability to the existing list of federal hate crimes. One of 30 Republicans who helped to pass the bill was Rep. Joe Schwarz, representing Lenawee County.”

Family group praises Cox appeal of court ruling on homosexual benefits
LANSING — A statewide family values group Saturday praised Attorney General Mike Cox’s decision to appeal a circuit court ruling that a voter-approved Marriage Protection Amendment to Michigan’s state constitution does not prevent state and local governments from forcing taxpayers to pay for providing spousal benefits to the partners of public employees involved in homosexual relationships.
A spokesman for the Attorney General’s office Friday announced Cox’s intention to appeal the decision handed down Tuesday by Ingham County Circuit Court Judge Joyce Draganchuk, the Detroit Free Press reported Saturday. http://www.freep.com/news/locway/samesex1e_20051001.htm
American Family Association of Michigan President Gary Glenn, who first proposed and co-authored the amendment overwhelmingly approved last November by Michigan voters, predicted that the state Supreme Court will agree with Cox and amendment backers that the measure does prohibit government employers from recognizing homosexual relationships as equal or similar to marriage for the purpose of providing employment benefits.
“On behalf of most Michigan families and voters, we are deeply grateful to Attorney General Cox for his faithfulness in representing the will of the people of Michigan and helping preserve the institution of one-man, one-woman marriage for future generations of children,” Glenn said. “We thank Attorney General Cox for his commitment to fully enforce our state constitution and prevent government from using our tax dollars to recognize and treat homosexual relationships as if they’re equal or similar to marriage, and we’re confident that in the end, the state Supreme Court will do just that.”

Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox said Friday he will appeal a ruling earlier this week by an Ingham County judge that OK’d health care benefits for the gay and lesbian partners of public employees.
Cox spokeswoman Allison Pierce said Michigan voters had spoken clearly when they approved the one man-one woman marriage amendment to the state constitution last year.
“We have an obligation to uphold their intent,” she said.
Ingham County Judge Joyce Draganchuk sided with a coalition of employees, unions, activists and universities that argued that health care benefits for the same-sex partners of public employees are not marriage or marriagelike benefits.
Cox had been urged to seek an appeal by some backers of the amendment and by several Republican legislators.
